TUNA TARTARE

One of my many many favorite things in life to eat is tartare. From salmon, to steak, to tuna, I always want and make sure to order some type of tartare whenever I am dining out. Tartare is one of those things I've always wanted to make at home but I have to admit that I didn't want to "ruin" a perfectly amazing and beautiful piece of tuna with my shenanigans. All that fear went away when I saw a great piece of tuna on a trip to the fish market recently.

Tartare - a dish made from finely chopped raw beef, tuna or salmon. Typically served chilled.

Tuna is one of those ingredients that is so perfect and so delicate on it's own, you don't have to do a lot to it as long as it's super fresh.  Sushi grade tuna is best but isn't always readily available (if you find some, buy it) however don't fret.  If you can get your hands on a beautiful tuna steak you're still going to eat fab. When consuming raw tuna or any other raw fish or meat for that matter you always want to seek out quality and freshness. No fishy smelling tuna here; it must be as fresh as you can purchase it.

For enjoying fresh tuna at home, I find that a tuna steak is easiest to work with.  The steak is easier to maneuver if it's your first time handling and slicing tuna and it will have minimal waste,  if any. Just make sure to discard the white muscular lines in the tuna. They are chewy and not fabulous at all.

Note the below recipe has no quantities so make as much or as little as you like !

Tuna Tartare

Fresh raw tuna steak

Scallions, ends trimmed and thinly sliced

Avocado, seeded & cubed

Soy sauce

Sesame oil

The juice of 1 lime

Salt, as preferred

Sesame seeds

Pat tuna dry and place on a flat surface. With a sharp knife cut tuna into small cubes and place in a bowl.

With the exception of the avocado and sesame seeds, add all of the ingredients to your desire preference and mix well. Once the tartare is flavored to your liking, gently add in the cubed avocado and serve as you wish. Top with sesame seeds, serve immediately & eat fabulously. Keep remaining tuna tartare chilled until ready to enjoy.
