Eating Fabulously, Christopher Stewart, Cascabel Taqueria,

Summer is in FULL swing here in NYC and with a heat wave that seems to be going into a month straight, going outside after 5pm seems to be the only logical and right thing to do. I constantly stress that when it's nice out (and the weather permits) aimlessly walking, reading menus, and dining out at new places is the absolute best thing to do, but this time in the heat, my mom an I only made it a block from where we started. 

Looking for something new and safely waiting for the crosswalk light to change, a crowded restaurant caught our eye on 108th and Broadway. A crowded restaurant is a good sign naturally, so we crossed the street and sat down inside Cascabel Taqueria, a small lively restaurant serving ice cold colorful drinks and an assortment of what appeared to be flavorful and bright tacos. You can almost tell just by looking, that something is packed with flavor as the plates of tacos and tapas passing by us stated the obvious. Every table had cold colorful beverages, trays of tacos, guacamole, corn, and other small plates so as usual, I couldn't wait to see on the menu. 

What I enjoyed most about the menu is that even the wording down to the dessert and the beverages were engaging. Cascabel stresses that every item in there restaurant is fresh, made in house, and they even serve organic tequila and a selection of micro brews. A option of tequila, beer, mezcal, and taco flights are also offered, which is definitely a different spin you dont see every day at most small casual restaurants. Although small plates, I naturally still wanted a various number of things on the menu (hey I cant help it), but I narrowed it down to the following......

Heres what we dined on: 

~Queso Fundido - Chihuahua cheese x house made chorizo x roasted poblano peppers 

~ Cangrejo y Maiz Frito - Blue crab x corn x fresh salsa x piquillo pepper aioli 

~Tacos Dorados - Marinated shrimp x roasted calabaza x fingerling potatoes x queso fresco x tomato 

~ Elote Asado - Grilled corn x mexican aioli x lime x cascabel chili x queso cotija 

~ Camaron - Roasted Shrimp x fresh oregano x garlic x chili oil x black bean 

~Watermelon Agua Fresca - Watermelon x organic agave x seltzer 

My contacts didnt decive me when I said that everything looked amazingly flavor full. No salt was needed when we devoured our appetizers of a Mexican version of a crab cake and a spicy take on fondue. My fundido was hot and extra cheesy as it came accompanied with a cute little brown bag filled with warm mini flour tortillas for scooping up all that cheesy spicy goodness. I didn't taste my moms shrimp tacos but from what I saw across the table two double layer tacos were filled to the rims with seasoned shrimp and other accompaniments.  My shrimp tacos were different as in they were slighty smashed and mixed with pumpkin, and rolled in a crispy taco shell, under this wonderful salad of fresh bibb lettuce, thick sliced radishes, and queso fresco. The best thing that came out to our table though, were the watermelon agua fresca's. This is the PERFECT non-alcoholic summer drink and it was only $3 !. The agua frescas come in 5 different flavors ( lime, orange, watermelon, grapefruit, and fruit punch) but the muddled watermelon, seltzer, agave,  and the slice of fresh watermelon garnish goes perfectly with the NYC heatwave!  Cascabel Taqueria WILL be seeing my face again since they have brunch on the weekends and outdoor seating, both of which fabulous eaters 2 things you guys know I cant dine without!
